19 Indian women got Nepali citizenship cards: VDC secy

Nineteen Indian women are found to have acquired Nepali citizenship certificates illegally from Rangeli VDC in Morang a week ago.

VDC Secretary Hari Prasad Pokharel said the women were helped by their parents to get the certificates from an integrated mobile service camp by forging documents that say the women were unmarried. He said the women of the VDC are found to have been married to Indian men five years ago.

Secretary Pokharel said he has recommended that the District Administration Office take action against the guilty. Chief District Officer Tara Nath Gautam is said to be leading investigations into the case.

Among those who procured citizenship cards are Nasima Khatun, Amita Kumari, Buchani Chaudhary, Saharuddin Khatun, Runa Kumari Mahato, Sonu Khatun, Samina Khatun and Nirasha Kumari Mahato.

He said a process has been initiated to annul their Nepali citizenship certificates.

Meanwhile, police arrested three persons including two Indian nationals on the charge of trying to acquire Nepali citizenship certificate from an integrated mobile service camp at Mrigauliya VDC-6 on Thursday.

Inspector Dilip Kumar Giri said that Indian national Sunita Gurung was found to have attempted to get the certificate with the help of her uncle Dambar Bahadur Gurung of Mrigauliya VDC-6 and her husband Gautam Kumar Chhetri.
