11 killed as passenger bus plunges into Madi River

Eleven people, including a minor, have been killed and ten others injured when a passenger bus heading towards Mungling from Pokhara skidded off the bridge over Madi River and plunged into the River at Damauli on Saturday afternoon.

The ill-fated bus (Na 4 Kha 4684) carrying some 35-40 passengers plunged into the River near Damauli of Tanahun district at around 5.30 PM.

Nepal Army and Police personnel carried out the rescue operation with the help of locals.

Eight people have been safely rescue d, said Superintendent of Police Dev Bahadur Bohara. They are now receiving medical attention in a nearby Hospital.

Among the deceased, six are men, four are women and one is a minor, the District Police Office Tanahu said. Identities of the deceased have not been ascertained yet, the police said.

The bus was half-immersed in the water after the fatal plunge. Locals suspect that many passengers might have been swept away by the River.

According to the eyewitnesses, the accident took place as the driver tried to save a child crossing the road.
